HR Function: the biggest transformation in the last 10 years

According to the Mercer Global Talent Trends 2026, the HR function is undergoing a fundamental transformation.

Mercer Global Talent Trends 2026 reports that HR teams are under increasing pressure. They are expected to move beyond traditional operational models and take on a more strategic role in shaping skills and organizational effectiveness.

But there is a serious challenge.

Research by HR.com found that 50% of HR professionals identify the ability to design future organizational structures, skills, and ways of working as the key priority for 2026. In other words, HR is no longer expected simply to recruit and administer. It is now expected to help shape how the business will operate tomorrow.

And this is where the gap emerges.

A critical imbalance is growing between what organizations expect HR to deliver and what HR teams are actually equipped to accomplish.

Organizations are managing several pressures simultaneously:

  • the adoption of new technologies;
  • hybrid work;
  • skills shortages;
  • economic uncertainty.

What does this mean in practice?

In 2026, skills are becoming the fundamental unit of workforce planning. They connect talent development with internal mobility and the long-term resilience of the organization.

However, to build these systems effectively, HR leaders need to have demonstrated competencies in strategic management.
