Return to Office: The Loudest Decision With No Results

In 2026, return-to-office mandates became one of the biggest corporate trends. Amazon, JPMorgan, AT&T, Dell — major companies one after another announced mandatory office presence. The logic seemed obvious: people together means more productive.

But the data says otherwise.

A study of 54 large S&P 500 companies recorded zero improvement in financial performance after RTO mandates were introduced. Meanwhile, employee satisfaction dropped critically. 8 out of 10 companies admitted losing talented people after enforcing strict office attendance requirements.

And here is what is most interesting.

Stanford conducted a large-scale randomised controlled trial — the gold standard of scientific research. The result: hybrid format delivers identical productivity compared to full office presence. At the same time, staff turnover decreases by 33%.

Companies that focus on processes, clear accountability and results — win regardless of location.
