Key Initiatives

The KNEU Innovative Development Programme supports the University’s integration into the European and global scientific and educational environment through fundamental and applied research, the activities of KNEU research institutes, the KNEU Science Park, Startup School, Centre for Entrepreneurship, innovation laboratories, and the European Digital Innovation Hub WIN2EDIH.

History and Development

Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman was founded in 1906 on the initiative of historian and scholar Mytrofan Dovnar-Zapolsky as the Kyiv Higher Commercial Courses. It became the first higher education institution specialising in economics on the territory of Ukraine.

In 1908, the Courses were reorganised into the Kyiv Commercial Institute, and in 1912 the Institute was granted rights equivalent to those of state higher education institutions. Over the following decades, the University underwent a series of institutional transformations, reflecting the development of economic education and research in Ukraine.

Throughout its development, KNEU has expanded its academic profile, research capacity, international cooperation and institutional infrastructure, evolving from a specialised commercial education institution into a major university in the field of economics and related disciplines.

Key milestones in the University’s development include:

1906 - establishment of the Kyiv Higher Commercial Courses
1908 - transformation into the Kyiv Commercial Institute
1944 - re-establishment in Kyiv as the Kyiv Finance and Economics Institute
1960 - transformation into the Kyiv Institute of National Economy, accompanied by a significant expansion of its academic profile
1992 - transformation into Kyiv State University of Economics following the restoration of Ukraine’s independence
1997 - granting of national university status in recognition of its contribution to economic education and research
2005 - the University was named after Vadym Hetman, a prominent Ukrainian economist and one of the architects of Ukraine’s modern banking and monetary system

The University’s current stage of development is guided by its Development Strategy for 2025-2029 and Programme of Innovative Development for 2025-2029, which continue its institutional transformation and strengthen its integration into the European and global scientific and educational environment.

KNEU educational programmes undergo accreditation in accordance with the national higher education quality assurance requirements of Ukraine. The University maintains and publishes accreditation decisions and certificates for its educational programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels.
